Trucks are the backbone of goods transport in the US but they have their limits. They need drivers and those drivers have limited hours they can drive. This means that more drivers are need to move more goods or to move them longer distances. Unfortunately, the US is facing a driver shortage at a time when the need is rapidly growing.
 
This is where Locomation comes in. Based in nearby Pittsburgh, Locomation is currently developing a platooning system that allows a pair of trucks to be controlled by a single driver on stretches of highway. As an added bonus, the second truck can have a driver resting and ready to take over the lead role once the first driver reaches their hours of service limit.
 
Although the goal is full autonomy, Locomation is using platooning to bridge the gap until the technology can be further developed. Even with the currently developing technology, the savings and benefits to adopters are real. Increased utilization and capacity combined with route optimization software is expected to result in increased margins of 15% or more.
 
The impressive part? The Locomation’s system is being tested now; a pair of trucks made a successful 280 mile trip on the Ohio Turnpike this fall from Pennsylvania to Michigan. Locomation is also the first company in the world to take an order for an autonomous commercial truck with a deal for more than 1000 systems over the next several years.

Çetin Meriçli is the CEO and co-founder of Locomation, a leading developer of safe and reliable autonomous driving technology for semi-trucks. An experienced entrepreneur and formerly a Special Faculty at the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) of Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute, Çetin has over 17 years of experience in developing and deploying complex robotic systems for commercial and military applications – and he has played key roles in over a dozen high profile applied robotics projects.
