Engineering as Social Experimentation: Involving the public in the design process

Presented by Prof. Kevin Passino of The Ohio State University

Without question, technology is changing our society. And as the implementing force of those changes, the engineering community needs to become more aware of the impact of those changes. This talk, which is part of Prof. Passino’s course on “Ethics in Electrical and Computer Engineering“, is part of this on-going discussion .

Abstract:

The engineering design process, from a broad perspective, includes testing products and processes on the public to see if they work well. When there are technology failures, then engineering should redesign (create version 2 of the technology) so that further failures do not occur, especially if those failures result in loss of life or degradation of health of the client. In this talk, this process of engineering as social experimentation will be explained and compared and contrasted to standard experiments. A range of case studies will be used to illustrate the main points.

Agenda:
